An alternative provision at Eccleston Equestrian Centre
Changing Lives Through Horses; Where inclusivity really matters.
Changing Lives Through Horses at Eccleston Equestrian Centre is an alternative provision where young people with additional learning needs or adverse childhood experiences can step out of the traditional classroom and thrive through equine facilitated learning.
Our programme welcomes learners in small tailored groups, 1-1 sessions and even whole school groups.
Functional skills are embedded within equine care and management sessions, ensuring learning remains engaging, practical, and stimulating for all participants.
Learners work towards British Horse Society recreational, professional and personal development qualifications, providing an industry recognised pathway that supports future success.
Participants naturally gain industry work experience through positive interactions with the centre team, while developing practical skills across the yard.
“I have not seen any other intervention have such an impact as EEC Changing Lives Through Horses has. Within a few weeks of starting CLTH, students have begun to self regulate their emotions and, in school, we have seen a dramatic decrease in students reaching crisis point. CLTH has allowed for positive relationships to form between students and staff. For students to experience a learning environment in which they can excel, feel comfortable to try new things and exhibit the qualities we are trying to achieve for all our students has been amazing. To watch the students working together, overcoming their fears, engaging in the learning and communicating together in a purposeful way, has been an honour.”
Witton Park Academy
“(SEMH need) has returned to classes and presents no behavioural issues during lessons. She is happy to engage in lessons and displays.”
Child A
“(ADHD and SEMH need) following a term of CLTH has shown a transformation in her behaviour and is now being transitioned back into
mainstream lessons. Attendance has improved by 12.5% since last year and there have been zero behaviour incidents since starting CLTH.”
Child B
“Makes me feel happy.”
“It is therapeutic and helps to keep me calm.”
“I find it interesting and distracts me from all my worries.”
Student Voice
Changing Lives Through Horses (CLTH) is an educational and character building programme which encompasses the development of Life Skills and academic achievement within an equine environment linked to the national curriculum.
At the centre of the CLTH programme are six fundamental Life Skills which are the foundation for helping young people flourish and are monitored throughout the programme:
The alternative provision is aimed at children and young people who have become or are at risk of becoming, disengaged or those with additional needs that mean they need more support to maintain their school placement. Participants who have benefited from the programme include those with special educational needs, including SEMH and those who may have experienced trauma or adverse childhood experiences or are poor attending in their current education placement.
